Berlin TXL – The Urban Tech Republic and the new Schumacher Quarter

Within six months after the opening the new international airport for Berlin and Brandenburg in Berlin-Schönefeld (BER), Berlin-Tegel Airport is to be closed down. The site will then be converted over the following years to create a research and industrial park for urban technologies: Berlin TXL – The Urban Tech Republic, and a new residential quarter: the Schumacher Quarter.

In the Urban Tech Republic, up to 1,000 large and smaller enterprises with 20,000 employees will carry out research, development and production. And the Beuth University of Applied Sciences will move into the former terminal building with more than 2,500 students. In total, around 5,000 students are expected on the Campus Berlin TXL. The focus of Berlin TXL will be

on the things that will keep the growing metropolitan centres alive through the 21st century: the efficient use of energy, sustainable building, environmentally-compatible mobility, recycling, the networked control of systems, clean water, and the use of new materials. Berlin TXL – The Urban Tech Republic is currently a unique project in Europe, if not worldwide.

In future, another development in the direct neighbourhood will offer a chance to view these new ideas for living in the cities of the future. In the Schumacher Quarter, more than 5,000 dwellings will be created for over 10,000 residents in a vibrant new urban quarter with child-care centres, schools, shops and services. It will demonstrate progressive solutions for climate-neutral energy supplies and high energy standards, as well as new models for mobility – the sorts of technologies being developed next door in the Urban Tech Republic. In the neighbouring quarters Cité Pasteur and TXL Nord a further 4,000 dwellings are planned.

Land Berlin has entrusted the Tegel Projekt GmbH with the development and management of Berlin TXL – The Urban Tech Republic and the Schumacher Quarter. The state-owned company, which currently employs 36 staff (April 2019), is working on the further development of the master plan, the brand development, planning for the building construction, the technical and transport infrastructure and energy services, as well as operative preparations and the public promotion of the project.
